Moldova was once a major wine producer for the Soviet Union. Today, it still relies heavily on Russia as an export market for its wine and sparkling wine. But lately Moldovan vintners have been seeking new markets.Moldova is a small country and one of Europe's poorest. However, few Western Europeans realize the country is a significant producer of wine, supplying a large portion of the wine consumed in Russia.
