When Steve Pollack started as a clerk at a northeastern Pennsylvania state liquor store in 1987, wine was for snobs.
"They speak French and are hoity-toity and wear a bow tie," Pollack said. "I'm just not that kind of guy."
As he climbed the store management ladder, he took every opportunity to learn about wine and to educate others to "just be yourself in wine." In January 2009, Pollack became the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board's merchandising and pricing coordinator, heading the Chairman's Selection program that sells discounted premium wines.
