(Wines&Vines) - It’s been growing for almost 10 years, but is not yet well known except by its users in 21 middle-American states. MarketMaker is a free website/app created at the University of Illinois to connect small and medium-sized food industry businesses with buyers and distributors near and far. Like the market websites that have served West Coast winegrape growers and potential customers for years, but far less specialized, MarketMaker users can find specific products—locally or elsewhere—or distributors/retailers to sell them. For crops like winegrapes, which experience radical swings vintage to vintage, it can help winemakers find state-grown grapes. Those in need of blenders, or whose brand does not depend on specific AVAs, can source raw product to keep barrels and bottles full year after year.
