(MercuryNews) - For some vintners, art and wine go hand in hand.
Some host art exhibits in their tasting rooms; others use the bottles themselves as gallery space, commissioning painters, sculptors or printmakers to create art that defines the wine.
At Glen Ellen's Imagery Estate Winery, for example, artist Bob Nugent curates the label art, drawing on a cadre of young, up-and-comers as well as prominent artists, such as Chinese-American painter Hung Liu, whose elaborate canvases explore her cultural heritage.
In Livermore, winemaker Darcie Kent brings her own artistic vision to her bottles, both inside and out. Her vivid vineyard paintings adorn every label.
And in Santa Cruz, Randall Grahm's Bonny Doon Vineyard is as famous for its creative, quirky label art as it is for the wine.
