(STUFF) - An Auckland wine broker tired of paying $14 for a glass of wine in city bars and restaurants is bringing back cheaper wine on tap.
The trend, which is spreading in Australia, Canada and the US, will see good quality Kiwi wine served from high-grade stainless steel kegs in Auckland restaurants and bars.
At just $7.50 a glass, it is targeted at younger drinkers and may spark renewed interest in some lesser known varieties.
Byron Henry, 27, of Revolution Wine Company has just launched his wine kegs at Britomart's Mexico Tequila Bar and Restaurant.
Ponsonby's Barrio has also signed up and should have wine flowing from his kegs within weeks.
Henry has teamed up with Waipara winemaker Theo Coles, of Crater Rim Winery, for pinot noir and sauvignon blanc.
Wine kegs have recently been launched by Versay in Montreal while The Gotham Project provides wine kegs in New York and m2 Wines in California.
