(Wines&Vines) - For grapegrowers in California’s North Coast region, the past week’s rain showers could not have arrived at a better time. According to Julie Nord, vineyard manager for Napa’s Nord Vineyards, the pre-rain soil profile was dry. “We had several reservoirs that were empty in Napa, and they’re full now,” she said Friday afternoon, when 0.78 inches fell in that region. “We are still happily doing our rain dance and glad it’s coming down.” The average March rainfall in Napa County is 3.1 inches, and the past week’s showers pushed the total for March 2012 to 3.72 inches. Still the area remained short of average season-to-date precipitation. In some Napa County vineyards bud break is already starting, but the warm rains shouldn’t damage the vines.
