Cash-strapped French wine town Saint Emilion sells off historical monument

(RFI) - The financial crisis hitting eurozone countries has stretched as far as the famous wine town of Saint Emilion in southwest France where a mayor has sold a medieval monument to pay off debts. The wine village, near the city of Bordeaux, and nearby vineyards were classified by the UN’s cultural organisation, Unesco, as a world heritage site in 1999 and the sale of the 14th century Cordeliers cloister has angered residents of the city.
