(ABC) - The Wine Industry Association says Australian winemakers are producing higher quality products in a bid to counter the oversupply of cheap wine that has appeared on the market in recent years.
New figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show a 19,000 tonne increase in the volume of grapes crushed over the past financial year.
Wine production however dropped by six per cent, or 69 million litres, over the same period.
Association spokeswoman, Aymee Mastaglia, says the figures show that wine producers are addressing the oversupply of cheaper wine.
