US: Pennsylvania: Privatization will only lead to higher prices for former State Store customers

(Philly) - As lawmakers debate legislation to dismantle Pennsylvania's Wine and Spirits shops and eliminate as many as 5,000 jobs in the process, I'm reminded of a Chicago Tribune article that asked, "Could an $8 airport pretzel be next?"
In light of a (now abandoned) plan to lease Midway Airport to a private operator a few years ago, the newspaper was examining what happens when public assets are privatized. It concluded, "Tolls go up, parking rates rise and the cost of using an airport takes off."
I'm not sure what a pretzel would cost at a privatized airport. But I know the taxes on most brands of wine and spirits sold in Pennsylvania will increase if lawmakers pass state House Republican leader Mike Turzai's legislation to privatize the Liquor Control Board.
