(Syracuse) - New York’s winemakers can’t catch California and now have to keep Washington state in sight as they try to hold onto the Empire State’s tenuous ranking as the country’s second-biggest wine producer.
Less restrictive laws, a new wine council and a low-budget fall promotional campaign are the latest steps New York is taking to add some sparkle to its reputation as a home to quality reds and whites.
The state is cutting red tape for vintners to open satellite stores and a bill in the legislature would create a state wine council to promote sales. The hope is for more tax revenue and jobs.
