US: Rain by the Yard in Eastern Vineyards

(Wines&Vines) - Early crush continues despite wet grapes; flavors thin but balanced. In less than two weeks of late August and early September, East Coast states from North Carolina to New England were drenched with yards of rain. How did this affect the region’s ripening vineyards and wineries they supply? The composite map published by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) shows where the heaviest rains fell along the East Coast during the period from Aug. 26 through Sept. 9. The dark blue color that stretches from eastern North Carolina north through Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and into Vermont represents an area that received between 24 and 32 inches of rain from Hurricane Irene and the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee.
