(Stargazette) - As a Finger Lakes grape grower, Vincent Aliperti is used to variable weather conditions.
But Aliperti, winemaker at Atwater Estates Vineyards in Hector, can't recall many roller coaster years like 2011.
An unusually wet spring gave way to arid conditions over the summer, only to be followed by another drenching fueled by two tropical storms.
Through it all, as the harvest gets underway, Aliperti is still optimistic that 2011 will be a very good year.
"This is a year really depending on where you are located. We had drought conditions in July. It didn't impact everyone the same way," Aliperti said. "Some had a reprieve, others had no reprieve. At Atwater, we are in good shape. The vines are still clean, the grapes are still clean. It looks promising. We just have to keep those hurricanes away."
