US: Minnesotans are drinking more wine than ever

Something’s causing Minnesota wine consumption to grow at a faster rate than the national average. According to the Beverage Information Group’s 2011 Wine Handbook, national wine consumption was up 2.1 percent in 2010 compared with 2009’s figures. That amounts to roughly 303 million 9-liter cases. Minnesota’s wine-drinkers may account for only 2.85 million of those cases, but that’s up from 2009’s 2.78 million cases, which means our state had a 2.8 percent growth rate from 2009 to 2010. Hey look, before anyone judges us, we’re still way behind Wisconsin in beer consumption per capita, and wine is totally classy, right? Right.
