(TheStreet) -- Wines' regional names do not have the protection of trademarks or brands, although the Center for Wine Origins, founded in 2005 by the wine-growing regions of Champagne, France, and Porto, Portugal, works to promote and protect the marketing of wines by region. The U.S. provides partial region protection, but in 2006 ended all future label approvals with European regional names (a year before California's Napa region, which recently joined the center, became the first U.S. region to win protection in the European Union).
