A couple of weeks ago, I addressed a reader's concerns that Ontario wines are overpriced. The column prompted many e-mails. Some readers argued that Ontario wines were too expensive ( "ridiculously expensive," wrote one), while others insisted they were good value. The president of a Niagara winery pointed out that Ontario wineries carry burdens that competitors in some countries don't: "more stringent environmental regulations, a punitive regulatory/ taxation regime, and most importantly, very little in the way of export and/or agricultural subsidies."
