Vines and berry bushes bear fruit from New York to Oregon. Nights are longer, days are darker, but hopeful vintners across the continent are pinning their hopes on brighter times to come, as tiny new wineries break ground, bottle wine and open for business this fall. Here are a few we’ve unearthed recently.
Magnus Ridge Winery, Rock Stream, N.Y.
Magnus Ridge bottled its first 60 cases of wine for a charity event in September, and in October broke ground on what is planned to be a destination winery near Seneca Lake. Owners Sandy and Matt Downey hope to open their new winery to the public next spring, but already they’ve invested buckets of sweat equity.
