Colorado Winegrowers Still Feel December Freeze

Grand Junction, Colo. -- Nearly 10 months after frigid temperatures seized acres of dormant vines on Colorado’s Western Slope, the region’s winegrape growers are still managing the fallout. And according to winemaker Nancy Janes, who owns Whitewater Hill Vineyards & Winery in Grand Junction, there is even more work ahead.
On Dec. 8, 2009, temperatures in Colorado’s Grand Valley growing area dipped below freezing and didn’t rebound for nearly a week. The worst day, Dec. 10, saw a minimum temperature of minus-25°F in some areas, while the average temperature for that day is 29°F, according to Weather Underground.
